Velocity Melbourne Trains Project

The Velocity Melbourne Trains Project was a fast-paced and technically demanding assignment that enabled our team to demonstrate advanced capability across electrical and mechanical design. Engaged as subcontractors, we were responsible for delivering a full 3D electrical layout for a train compartment featuring a fully equipped onboard kitchen. Working in close collaboration with Ricardo, the lead electrical contractor, we delivered a refined and installation-ready solution within tight project timelines.

Scope & Objectives

Our brief focused on designing and coordinating:

  • A complete 3D electrical layout for the compartment

  • Appliance-ready power distribution for the kitchen area

  • Routing for all wiring and fluid piping

  • Sheet-metal redesign of the pantry

  • Installation documentation and visual diagrams

The challenge lay in integrating multiple complex systems within a confined space while ensuring safety, serviceability, and compatibility with the overall train design.

Electrical Design Excellence

3D Electrical Layout

We developed a comprehensive electrical system layout for the compartment, with particular attention to the appliance-heavy kitchen zone. Our design ensured:

  • Safe and efficient power distribution

  • Optimal placement of electrical components

  • Compliance with industry standards and contractor requirements

Connection & Routing Diagrams

To support installation teams, we produced:

  • Clear connection diagrams detailing how each component interfaces

  • Wire routing paths modelled in 3D to ensure efficient cable management, minimise interference, and maximise accessibility

  • Step-by-step visual installation diagrams that significantly accelerated onsite implementation

Mechanical Enhancements

Beyond the electrical scope, we contributed key mechanical design improvements:

Pantry Redesign (Sheet Metal)

We redesigned the kitchen pantry using sheet-metal principles to enhance:

  • Space utilisation

  • Accessibility

  • Integration with the train’s interior aesthetic

3D Piping Flow System

Using SolidWorks routing, we modelled the entire piping system supplying water and other fluids to the kitchen. By analysing and simulating flow paths, we eliminated potential performance issues before installation, ensuring a stable and efficient system.

Technology & Workflow

The entire project was executed in SolidWorks 3D, leveraging:

  • Routing tools for wiring and piping

  • Simulation and interference detection

  • Detailed 3D assemblies for design validation

  • Accurate installation diagrams generated from the model

This approach allowed us to detect issues early, optimise space usage, and deliver highly accurate construction-ready documentation.

Challenges & Solutions

Working to aggressive deadlines, coordination between multiple contractors was essential. We maintained real-time communication with Ricardo’s teams, aligning our designs through frequent updates. The confined nature of the train compartment also demanded meticulous 3D analysis. Using SolidWorks’ advanced tools, we refined the layout until every electrical and mechanical element integrated seamlessly.

Outcome

The Velocity Melbourne Trains Project is a strong example of our ability to deliver precision engineering under pressure. Our contribution—spanning electrical design, mechanical upgrades, routing, and documentation—played a crucial role in the successful delivery of the compartment’s functional systems.

This project highlights our strengths in collaboration, technical expertise, and efficient, high-quality delivery.
